CT Designer Keturah starts a GoFundMe page to help people with anxiety and depression, explains her care packages, new program and more!

Beyond The Lens – Connecticut fashion designer Keturah, founder of EccentricChic, is doing something pretty sweet for people that suffer from anxiety and depression. She’s personally putting together a program and told me it’s to help young children and adults with clinically diagnosed anxiety or depression. As a person who went through the experience, she hopes this will help others feel like there is someone out there that cares. She also recruited Independent Connecticut model Sam Cahill to be one of her spokespeople for the project.

I caught up with Keturah to get a better understanding of her experience going through depression and anxiety, her program and gift packages that are being created, the possibilities of having anxiety and depression without knowing it and more. You could go to her GoFundMe page by clicking the link below. Enjoy the interview!

Internet Hollywood: Dealing with anxiety is a very important issue that I strongly feel should be talked about since times are a bit tougher now and things don’t seem to be getting any better. I definitely would like to applaud you taking a stand and doing something brave for people that need it. What made you want to decide to take a stand and do something about it?

Keturah: Growing up it was always one of my goals to open an arts and therapy center for young children. One day I realized I could still help in small ways until I reach that goal. I made a care package for a close friend one day when she was struggling to get through her anxiety and depression and it helped her feel better and let her know that I do care. I want to give that same feeling to other people.

Internet Hollywood: What is in the care package that you would like to give to the ones suffering from anxiety and depression?

Keturah: The care package contains different things based on the individual wants and needs of the recipient. I use the information provided to me by their loved one in order to specialize each one. They tell me things such as the person’s favorite colors, tv shows, food, hobbies, etc. These things can also be things that a person really needs. I put inspirational quotes inside and include a small letter to the person it’s addressed to.

Internet Hollywood: Being a very strong person that went through the challenges of anxiety and depression, what would you say helped you get through the things you were going through?

Keturah: As a person who personally struggles with Anxiety and depression the things that helped me a lot of times were just positive distractions such as my art and doing things to help other people. I often find doing things with your hands or something that takes a lot of your focus gives your mind a rest when it’s been racing all day or night. I also would read inspirational quotes on places like Facebook or Instagram they gave me some hope. Also talking to people who cared. I’ve would’nt have survived most days without God. Prayer and scriptures definitely helped. Even if you don’t believe in God there is restoration in meditation and self care.

Internet Hollywood: I also noticed on the GoFundMe that you said you were sending care packages to your “first 25” people. How many people do you plan on giving care packages to in total?

Keturah: Well the first goal amount I set to raise is $1,000 in order to get packages out to my first 25 people. I absolutely want to eventually help more than that. This project is non profit so I’ll help as many people as the budget will allow. EccentricChic also donates some of its profits to this cause as well. So any items bought from us or services purchased also help us reach our goals.

Internet Hollywood: When people suffer from depression and anxiety what do you feel they crave most while experiencing those dark emotions?

Keturah:  with Depression and Anxiety everyone is different they may want or need different things. The best thing to do I to ask do you need anything? The person may not always be in a position to answer that question for you but if you see that they have trouble with small tasks like housekeeping offer to help them. If you see they haven’t eaten cook or buy them some food. Daily tasks can become really difficult. Invite them to go out even if they may say no continue to ask every now and then. Change of environment and sun can improve your mood. If there’s something that is specifically bothering them try to talk them through it or if your not good at that just listen and confirm you’re hearing and understanding.

Internet Hollywood: How do we better understand people that may need help but don’t really know how to tell us? What are some symptoms we look for?

Keturah: As i mentioned Everyone is different and I’m not a certified expert I only tell you what I know from personal experiences and from what I ve seen others go through. Anxiety attacks can come in different forms it may look like a person constantly spacing out or disconnecting. Not feeling like your able to breathe. Restlessness and many more symptoms. Depression also can look like many things. Some are very good at hiding it. It can also be helpful to do some research about these particular conditions. But usually, a conversation is the best way to know. If you just ask if a person is fine they will say yeah I’m good. Be specific ask if they like their job or if they’re happy with school. How’s life at home? If they seem unhappy then make them feel comfortable enough to talk about what’s going on. One big thing I try not to do when people confide in me is to never minimize their problems. That can often times make a person feel they do not matter and people do not care.

Internet Hollywood: Is it possible for people to have anxiety and depression and not know it?

Keturah: Yes it’s possible for someone to have anxiety or depression and not know it. I went through panic attacks as a kid and never knew it was called Anxiety. I rarely had the motivation to do daily tasks or sometimes go outside not knowing it was depression. It wasn’t until I had a panic attack at school that someone recognized what it was and I went to see a psychologist. I’ve witnessed someone having a panic attack and not even know that it’s related to anxiety. It’s entirely possible.

Internet Hollywood: Last question; what are some things people could do to avoid ending up in those dark stages in their life?

Keturah: I’m not sure if you can avoid dark stages in your life everyone has to deal with them at some point mentally illness or not. What I think people need to learn is not avoidance but positive coping mechanisms. I am a spiritual person so I believe in God and that he does not give us what we can’t handle. Find what works for you. Try different things that make you happy. If there’s negativity around you get rid of it. If something’s not making you happy work to change it.

Internet Hollywood: Thank you for the interview, Keturah.Thank you for your brave move to bring happiness to this world!
